Description:
Sweet Birch (Betula lenta), is native to Northern America, southern Canada, Eastern Europe, and some parts of Russia. Sweet birch, also called cherry birch or black birch is characterized by black-brown bark and foliage that turns bright yellow in the fall months.
Sweet birch is Cultivation by seeds. Sweet birch prefers deep, fertile, moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Sweet birch grows best in bright, direct sunlight. The leaves, twigs, and bark of a sweet birch having a strong camphoraceous aroma and can be utilized in the extraction of essential oil.
Essential oil is generally extracted from the bark of sweet birch by steam distillation. The bark is macerated from the plant and soaked for up to 12 hours before distillation. The yield of essential oil from bark is from 4 to 6%.
Unlike most essential oils, Sweet Birch oil is denser (heavier) than water. This makes for a dramatic view of the oil separating from the water.
The primary chemical constituent of Sweet Birch essential oil is Methyl Salicylate. Sweet Birch oil is used in aromatherapy for its pain-relieving effect on the joints, especially on sore muscles and joints.
