Description:
Spruce (Picea mariana) is native to North America, especially in eastern Canada. Picea mariana is one of the 40 species in the genus Picea of the family Pinaceae, all are found in the cooler region of the northern hemisphere. This spruce is also called Black spruce.

The essential oil is used as a top note.

Cultivation and Harvesting:
It is propagated by vegetative and by Seeds both. Propagation by seed through layering and in case of vegetative, a live branch at the base of the stem becomes embedded in the suitable rooting medium. Soil should be wet, slightly acid, well-drained.

Black Spruce is a slow-growing evergreen conifer, trees average 30 to 50 feet in height and 6 to 10 inches in diameter at maturity. Black spruce trees have sharp and bluish green needle (leaves) contains essential oil. The twigs and needles are collected from the Picea mariana throughout the year. Essential oil is extracted from Needles and Twigs by the process of steam distillation.

The yield of spruce oil is from 0.4 to 0.8 %.
