Description:
Citrus aurantium is perhaps originated in northeastern India and adjoining areas of China and Myanmar. Countries like the USA, Brazil, China, India, Dominican Republic, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Turkey, Guinea, Haiti, South Africa, Jamaica, Paraguay, Egypt, and West Indie are cultivating bitter orange trees for the production of essential oil.
Cultivation is done through seedlings. Soil should be moderately heavy loam with a pH between 5 and 6 free from waterlogging.
The bitter orange is generally grown for its edible fruit in warm temperate and tropical zones. Harvesting of fruits must be done at the right time so that maximum oil content can be achieved.
Orange bitter essential oil is obtained by cold expression of the rind, and the yields of essential oil vary from 2 to 4%.
