Description:
Niaouli is a large evergreen tree that is native to the coastal region of eastern Australia. This species extends into southern Papua New Guinea, Irian, Indonesia, California, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.

Niaouli oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves. This aromatic oil has a fresh fragrance and is distilled from the leaf. A medium-sized to a tall tree, growing from 8 to 20 meters tall and 5 to 8 meters wide, with thick soft papery bark in cream to brown color.

The leaves of Melaleuca quinquenervia are a source of a cineole-rich essential oil called niaouli oil used in pharmaceutical products like gargles, toothpaste, flavor cough drops, and aromatherapy. The Production of niaouli oil in the world is very less in comparison to other essential oils.

The ingredients of this oil are alpha-pinene, cineole, limonene, piperitone, alpha phellandrene, gamma terpineol, linalool, and beta-pinene.

The Niaouli essential oil is used to heal the immune system and respiratory and pulmonary infections.

Cultivation and Harvesting:
It has been planted in the tropical lowlands of India, the Philippines, the West Indies, Guyana, Madagascar, and the United States. Propagation of Melaleuca quinquenervia is by seed which can be sown either in seedbeds or directly into nursery containers. Mature seed germinates readily and does not require pretreatment.

The tree has five-inch long leaves and white-yellow flowers that blossom in tight spikes. The Leaves for niaouli oil production are collected from natural stands only, by slashing branches and stripping the leaves.
