Description:
Ocimum sanctum, a species native to India. In India, the plant is grown throughout the country from Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the Himalayas.

Holy Basil contains a large percentage of Eugenol, a chemical constituent that gives Clove Oil its characteristic aroma. Eugenol and methyl chavicol are the main chemical constituents of holy basil oil. The whole herb contains 0.4-0.8% essential oil.

Holy basil oil is used to treat many conditions including viral disease. It may also act as a natural insect repellent especially active on mosquitoes.

Eugenol, eugenol methyl ether, carvacrol, β-caryophyllene Bisabolene,1,8-Cineole, Methyl chavicol (Estragol), Germacrene and Linalool.
