Description:
The clove tree is native to the Moluccas Islands, a group of islands that is now part of Indonesia. Today, cloves are grown in Zanzibar, Indonesia, Madagascar, India, Pakistan, and Brazil. But, Indonesia and Madagascar is the main clove bud oil producer. Clove trees start producing buds after five years but will continue to produce buds for at least the next twenty years.
Clove buds are commonly used as a spice. Cloves are available throughout the year due to different harvest seasons in different countries. Clove buds are used as a spice and in traditional medicine as an analgesic.
The clove bud essential oil is obtained from the steam distillation of the flowering buds of the clove tree. The yield of essential oil is 12-16%.
This essential oil is strongly pungent owing to the presence of a huge amount of eugenol(60 to 90%).
There are mainly three types of clove oil:
(i) Bud oil: Extracted from clove bud generally contains 56-70% eugenol.
(ii)Leaf oil: Extracted from clove leaf generally contains 72-80% eugenol.
(iii) Stem oil: Extracted from clove twigs generally contains 78-90% eugenol.
