Description:
Bergamot is growing almost exclusively in South Italy. This tree is native to South East Asia, but it is also found in Europe, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria. Now a day the main growing areas worldwide are Italy which makes up around 85% of total production. In northern Africa and Turkey bergamot is grown on a very minor scale. In South-East Asia its cultivation is not common.
Bergamot is commercially grown primarily for the essential oil. The fruits ripen between December and March. Bergamot essential oil is extracted from the peel of the ripe fruit. The oil yield varies from 2 to 4%.
In perfumery, oil is used as a top note. Production of Bergamot oil is commercially important because it is one of the ingredients in the famous Eau de Cologne and ingredient in the perfume industry especially in Deo and Spray perfume. Today, bergamot is a key ingredient in more than 50% of all fine fragrances and 75% in spray perfume worldwide. It is considered one of the important because of its refreshing aroma.
