Description:
Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is native to the hilly region of the Mediterranean and western Asian countries. It is cultivated in the United States, Mexico, Greece, Turkey, the Dominican Republic, and Italy. In India, it is found from Kashmir to Sikkim.
Oregano is also called origanum or wild marjoram. It is perennial herbs of the mint family-Lamiaceae which is drought resistant. The plant requires well-drained soil, cool weather, pH should be slightly alkaline and rich in organic matter. The Oregano plant propagated by taking root or stem cuttings of the plant or seeds.
The common method for the extraction of essential oil is the steam distillation of Leaves. The leaves are hairy, oval-shaped, about 4 cm in diameter, and grow opposite to each other. The essential oil yield ranges from 1.0 to 4%. The principal constituents of the essential oil are Carvacrol and Thymol. These two constituents are ranging to over 80% of the total essential oil.
