Description:
Gardenia genus includes over 200 species, native to China. Gardenia jasminoides plant originated in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Southern Asia, Australia, China, and Oceania with its shiny green leaves and fragrant white summer flowers. Many species of gardenias is cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, Japan, Madagascar, and pacific island.

Essential oil is extracted from flowers which yield 0.05 to 0.5%.

The main volatile component in essential oil are aldehydes, esters, aliphatic acids, ketones, alcohols, and aromatic derivatives. Some of the principal constituents are Benzyl acetate, Methyl anthranilate, farnesene, cis-ocimene, Phenylacetate, Terpineol, Linalyl acetate, Linalool, cis-3-hexenyl tiglate, and methyl benzoate.
