Description:
Native to Europe and western Asia, Coriander is cultivated across the world. Coriander oil mainly produced in the regions from Southern Europe and Northern Africa to Southwestern Asia and commercially produced in India, Russia, France, Morocco, Central America, East European countries, Mexico, USA, and worldwide.
Moroccan coriander has the boldest appearance, followed by the Egyptian and Indian varieties. Most coriander is produced in Morocco, Romania, and Egypt, but India and China also producing small quantities.
In India the major producers are Rajasthan (56%) and Madhya Pradesh (15%), both constituting more than 70% of the total domestic output. The other major producers are Gujarat, UP, and Andhra Pradesh.
The essential oil is extracted from coriander seed, the amounts of oil ranging from approximately 0.5 to 1.7%, and, in some cases, up to 2.7%.
The oil is used both in flavors and in the manufacture of perfumes and soaps. The major constituents of Coriander oil are Linalool, Geranyl acetate, Cedrene, Caryophyllene, Citronellal, Geraniol, and Citronellyl acetate.
