Description:
Cumin is native to Egypt but now cultivated in the Mediterranean region especially France, Morocco, Spain also in India, and USSR. The oil is mainly produced in India, France, and Spain. Today, cumin seed is mostly cultivated in the Indian subcontinent, Northern Africa, Mexico, Chile, and China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan Morocco, Egypt, Iran, Chile, Mexico, and Turkey. In India, its production is concentrated mainly in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh states.

Cumin contains essential oil of about 0.5 to 1.6%. Its aroma is due to the presence of Cuminaldehyde in essential oil up to the extent of 45–50%. Other main constituents of the essential oil are β-pinene, γ-terpinene, p-cymene and cuminic alcohol.
