Description:
Pinus mugo is known as Creeping pine, Dwarf mountain pine, Scrub mountain pine, Mountain pine. It is native to high elevation habitats from southwestern to Central Europe and Southeast Europe. Pinus mugo tree grows abundantly in Austria, northern Italy, Central Europe, in pre-Alps and Alps areas of Switzerland, Balkans, and Yugoslavia.
Propagation by seed is the primary way of regeneration for Pinus mugo, but vegetative propagation is also possible. Pinus mugo is an evergreen tree that can grow 2 – 4 meters tall. Grows well on well-developed highland soils, dry rocky slopes, able to tolerate temperatures below -20°c.
The essential oil of Pinus mugo can be extracted from needles (leaves) and the young branches and the yields from 0.2 to 0.5%.
