Description:
Ravensara Aromatica is a tree belonging to the family Lauraceae and endemic to the island of Madagascar. Ravensara Aromatica sometimes called clove nutmeg. The bark, leaves, and fruit are rich in aromatic essential oils.

The bark is reddish, the leaves are broad evergreens elliptical in shape, flowers are green and fruit is produced with six septum inside. The tree can thrive in humid conditions with an altitude between 70 and 100 meters.

Ravensara oil is often confused with Ravintsara oil. Note that both oils are different essential oils. Ravensara oil is extracted from Ravensara Aromatica whereas Ravintsara oil from Cinnamomum camphora, but both the tree belongs to the same family i.e. Lauraceae.

Ravensara oil is distilled from the leaves of the tree named Ravensara aromatica also known as Agatophyllum aromaticum. It contains small amounts of Methyl chavicol (estragole), sabinene, 1,8-cineole, and alpha-terpinene with a large percentage of limonene. The bark of this tree gives essential oil with a much higher content of Methyl chavicol (45-50%) than the leaf oil. Methyl chavicol is a suspected carcinogen and hepatoxin. The oil having a higher content of Methyl chavicol is not used in Aromatherapy.
