Description:
Pimento is native to Jamaica, Mexico, Cuba, and Haiti. Pimento is indigenous to West Indies and Jamaica is the main producer of Pimento berry oil. In India, there are few trees in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Karnataka.
Pimento Berry essential oil is also known as Allspice essential oil. The smell of this oil is similar to clove and cinnamon because these essential oils have a high content of Eugenol.
Cultivation and Harvesting:
Cultivation of Pimento plants is through seeds. Pimento is an evergreen tree that grows up to 10 meters high, having dark, glossy green, leathery and smooth leaves. Pimento plants start flowering when they are 6 to 8 years old, but harvesting starts from 7 to 10 years when the berries are fully grown but green.
Pimento flowers during March-June and fruit is a two-seeded berry which is matured in 2 to 3 months after flowering. A tree yields 50 to 60 kg of dry berries and the essential oil yield in berries varies from 1.5 to 4.5% and its major constituents eugenol is from 60 to 65%.
Pimento essential oil is having high Eugenol content; therefore, Pimento oil may act as antiviral oil.
